31 favorite monsters: the purple fly

I watched a lot of the Smurfs when I was little, but I never remember seeing the one with the smurf-sized zombie apocalypse. As an easily frightened child I may have just blocked it out, because it's honestly pretty damn horrifying by kid standards. The purple fly is seen only briefly at the start of the episode, but bites Lazy Smurf on the tail and begins a surprisingly disturbing epidemic; Lazy turns purple, starts hopping everywhere, can only shout "g'nap!" and takes every possible opportunity to bite his fellow smurfs, transmitting the mysterious infection. Everything goes back to normal in the end, of course, but not until they've made sure that every little kid in the audience is having nightmares tonight.

Interestingly, this episode was adapted from one of the original 1960's Smurf comics, but formerly involved a plague of mindless black Smurfs. You can guess why they decided to go with purple - the same reason they went with purple for the formerly black-faced Pokemon, Jynx. So remember: all purple cartoon characters are just veiled jabs at black people.

My mom (she's from finland) once told me she was amused she read in a finnish newspaper children were more scared of the Moomins than of any horror movie. I wasn't surprised at all. It's an extremely beautiful series I loved as a child, but it is also deeply inspired by dark nordic mythology, and some of the creatures portrayed in this universe are just a bit too much for a child to take. One wonderful example are the Hattivatti, pale and silent electric eel people who sail around in boats in some never-ending quest. http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hattivatti . I'd really advise you to look a bit into the series, if you don't know it already.

A couple of things.

First, Smurfs are canonically described as being three apples tall, so that's a really big bug. Like huge!

Second, Papa Smurf says near the beginning that he forgot what the cure to Purple Smurf Zombies were. If I found out that zombies were real and found out the cure, you better be damn sure that I'd remember what that cure was. I'd write it all over my room, and then people would come in, think I'm crazy, and then go "Oh wait, this is just the cure for being a zombie. He's actually quite sane".

Finally, there must be more of those Purple Smurf Zombie Bugs out there! Everybody run!
